The Relationship Between Bats and Tequila.

Most of us know tequila is made from agave, the spiky desert plant used as its base. But did you know, it's hard to have agave without bats. It’s true, bats are to agave as honeybees are to fruits and vegetables. Who knew that bats are the agave plant’s primary pollinators? Agave co-evolved with bats over thousands of years. As a result, it's one of the very few plants that pollinates at night. Having recently discovered these cool facts, it’s no wonder that we decided to get in on the bat action and come up with a tequila of our own.

Some more cool facts. These winged partners of ours use their long tongues to actually dig into the agave plant’s flower and get out that really awesome nectar for them to eat. The bats literally get their heads covered in this pollen. And as they're going from agave plant to agave plant, they're pollinating them at the same time.Did you know, bats, like vampires and us mere mortals, have belly buttons. They're the second largest group of mammals in the world. The tube-lipped nectar bat has the longest tongue of any animal relative to its size in the world. Bats assist making the production of tequila more sustainable. As one might think, Vampyre Tequila is a bat-friendly tequila brand. Our partner tequileria allows a portion of agave plants in its agave farms to flower — and feed the flying creatures who come trick-or-treating for their pollen after dark.
